Teen Terror Arrests Spark Concern Over Rising Youth Radicalisation
Essex Man Held for Terrorism Offences
An 18-year-old man was arrested in Essex on Wednesday, 18 May, on suspicion of encouraging terrorism under Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006 (TACT). Initially detained under PACE, he was re-arrested the following day under TACT.
Westminster Magistrates’ Court granted a warrant extending his detention until Wednesday, 25 May. He is currently held at a London police station while inquiries continue.
East London Girl Arrested in Linked Investigation
The probe widened on Friday, 20 May, when a 17-year-old girl was arrested at an east London address. She faces charges under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and remains in custody at a London police station.
The investigation ties back to suspected offences connected to extreme Islamist ideology.
Met Chief Warns of Growing Trend Among Teens
Commander Richard Smith, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “We have seen three teenagers arrested this week by Met officers for terrorism offences, albeit as part of separate investigations. We need to let this investigation run its course, but it is a further indication of a concerning upward trend in police action against younger people for terrorism-related matters.”
“Across the country, police are working hard to prevent young people from being radicalised and act swiftly when offences are suspected.
“Police rely on information from the public in our mission to tackle terrorism. If you see or hear something suspicious and think someone may be involved in terrorist activity, trust your instincts and contact police.”
