Knife Attack in Tonbridge Park Ends in Tragedy
In the early hours of 19 August 2022, 20-year-old Thomas Waugh was sitting on a bench at Tonbridge Racecourse Park with two friends when trouble struck. Two strangers, Rocco Mustafa and Reece Willis, approached them – Mustafa brandishing a large knife.
Brutal Robbery Turns Deadly
The pair threatened the friends, demanding their phones. While Thomas tried to negotiate and offered cash, he fled the scene. Left behind, Thomas’ friends handed over a gold chain, cigarettes, and £5 out of fear for their safety.
Thomas returned armed with a stick, creating a distraction so his friends could escape. But the attackers chased him into a nearby car park, where Mustafa viciously stabbed him in the torso. Despite first aid efforts, Thomas tragically died at the scene.
Fast Police Work Leads to Arrests
Detectives found Mustafa had called his mother, Claire White, shortly after the attack. She traveled to Tonbridge but, frightened by the heavy police presence, collected him the next day instead. The Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate launched an investigation and arrested both Mustafa and Willis on 21 August.
Both were charged with murder, two robberies, and an attempted robbery. White was also charged with assisting an offender.
Court Verdicts and Sentences
- On 27 January 2023, Mustafa, 18, pleaded guilty to all charges at Maidstone Crown Court.
- Willis, 17, initially pleaded not guilty but was convicted on all charges, including murder, after a trial concluded on 11 April.
- White, 48, was convicted for assisting an offender on the same day.
On 21 July, Mustafa was sentenced to 18 years and 215 days in prison. Willis received 14 years and 33 days, while White was handed three years behind bars.
Investigator’s Statement on Tragic Loss
“This was a shocking incident in which a young man lost his life protecting his friends. His brave actions highlight the stark contrast with two teenagers consumed by violence. Their horrific behaviour has left a family devastated by the needless loss of a much-loved young man bright with promise,” said Senior Investigating Officer DCI Neil Kimber.
“Claire White’s conduct was also deplorable and she should be ashamed. We hope these sentences bring some closure to Thomas’ family and friends after this tragic death.”
