Warning After Spate of Distraction Thefts in Wiltshire Supermarket Car Parks
Wiltshire Police have issued a stark warning after a rash of distraction thefts hit supermarket car parks in Chippenham and Melksham. Thieves are targeting shoppers, especially those in disabled bays, using crafty charity donation scams to nab cash.
Shopper Beware: Charity Scam in Waitrose and Sainsbury’s Car Parks
The crooks strike at major supermarkets like Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. They approach victims asking for donations to charity. When shoppers reach for their wallets, the thief distracts them further with a clipboard – then pockets as much cash as they can.
Wiltshire Police Issue Urgent Safety Advice
“We are asking for people to be on their guard in supermarket car parks and report any suspicious behaviour to us,” said PC Mark Giles of Wiltshire Police. “The offenders seem to be targeting vulnerable customers, using disabled bays and taking advantage of their good nature.”
What You Should Do
- Stay alert when approached in car parks, especially near disabled parking bays.
- Don’t hand over money without checking the legitimacy of any charity request.
- Report suspicious activity immediately by calling 101 or 999 in an emergency.
- Use the textphone service on 999 or 18000 (if pre-registered) or contact emergency services via 999 BSL with a British Sign Language interpreter if needed.
