Wiltshire Cop Fired Over Fake Firearms Training

PC Mat Hodge has been sacked without warning from Wiltshire Police after a misconduct hearing slammed his actions as gross misconduct. The hearing, held at Wiltshire Police HQ on October 1-2, 2024, was led by Assistant Chief Constable Deb Smith.

Faked Training Sparks Dismissal

Hodge, who was a Firearms Instructor at the Blackrock Specialist Training Centre, skipped delivering a mandatory refresher course in January 2024. Instead, he lied to his bosses, falsely claiming the officers had completed the vital training.

The panel ruled that PC Hodge broke the rules on honesty, duties, and conduct, leading to his immediate dismissal. He’s also been added to the national barred list, banning him from working in police roles ever again.

Top Brass Slam Dishonesty

“PC Hodge’s actions were far below the standards expected of him and could have had potentially serious consequences. Thankfully, the issue was uncovered quickly, and all those impacted have since received the necessary training,” said Deputy Chief Constable Craig Dibdin.

DCC Dibdin added: “We expect nothing but the highest standards of honesty and integrity from our officers, staff, and volunteers. We will continue to root out those who undermine the trust and confidence our communities place in us.”

He also praised those who came forward: “It takes courage to report wrongdoing, but it is essential in ensuring we maintain professionalism and accountability.”

PC Hodge Faces Appeal Window

Under Police Conduct Regulations 2020, PC Hodge now has 10 working days to lodge an appeal against his dismissal. However, his police career looks done and dusted.
