Nationwide Gun Surrender Sees Dozens of Weapons Off Streets
Antique and Modern Firearms Handed In
The National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) led a major nationwide crackdown, urging people to hand in firearms without penalty. This included antique guns that were once legal before 2021’s law changes. Police also urged citizens to turn in decommissioned weapons that could be easily reactivated by criminals.
What’s Off the Streets?
- 12 shotguns (including a sawed-off version)
- 10 handguns, notably a Walther PPK – James Bond’s favourite
- 6 rifles, including a battered WWII-era Mauser K98
- 7 air rifles and pistols
- 4 BB guns
- One crossbow
Police Warn of Fake Guns Fueling Crime
“Every weapon taken off our streets can save a life or prevent serious injury,” said Sgt Bill Monk of Specialist Operations. “Realistic-looking imitation guns are dangerous because people can’t tell them apart from the real deal.”
“Criminals use replica guns to scare the public. We’re helping protect communities by removing these threats.”
