£24 Million to Revamp Lewisham Town Centre
Lewisham Council has announced a bold £24 million plan to revive Lewisham town centre. Backed by a hefty £19 million from the government’s Levelling Up Fund and £5 million from the council itself, the cash boost targets local businesses, community spaces, and transport links.
Historic Market and Clock Tower Get a Makeover
The iconic Lewisham market is central to the makeover. Plans include a revamped layout to fit more traders, better waste management, and eco-friendly canopies to keep stalls open longer. New paving, lighting, and comfy seating will freshen up the area and draw in more visitors.
Meanwhile, the Grade II listed Clock Tower will be refurbished to preserve its classic charm while securing its future. Lewisham Library is set for a striking transformation too, turning into a buzzing culture and business hub complete with:
- Expanded book collections
- Dedicated workspaces for entrepreneurs and students
- A rooftop bar and ground floor café
- “Lewisham Lounge” community space for events and exhibitions
High Street Upgrades and New Mobility Hub
Lewisham’s high street is getting a facelift with an eye on better connectivity. New pedestrian crossings, lush green spaces, and improved cycling lanes are in the pipeline. A cutting-edge mobility hub will cater to cyclists and electric vehicles, while enhanced lighting and CCTV will boost safety across the area.
Council Rallies Community for Input
“This investment is set to fuel economic growth, create jobs, and make Lewisham town centre a lively, welcoming spot,” a council spokesperson said. “We’re keen to hear residents’ thoughts to make sure these changes truly benefit the community.”
