Tree-Cutting Scandal Rocks Elmbridge and Spelthorne
Police have arrested a man following a series of daring tree cutdowns across Elmbridge and parts of Spelthorne. Around 35 trees were felled over the last month, sparking outrage among locals.
Residents Raise Alarm After Overnight Tree Vandalism
The first alert came on Sunday, 21 March, when residents spotted several trees chopped down overnight. The destruction didn’t stop there—additional trees were taken down in the weeks that followed. Some were even dumped across roads, causing havoc and disruption.
Police Crack the Case with Community Help
Surrey Police praised the community’s swift response. “We received a fantastic response from residents who contacted us with information,” said officers. This tip-off helped identify a suspect vehicle linked to the crime spree.
On the night of 22 April, police stopped the vehicle. Searches at the man’s car and home uncovered multiple chainsaws and wood chippings. The man was promptly arrested and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Inspector Bert Dean, Elmbridge Borough Commander, said: “This is an encouraging development in this investigation. We continue to piece together the evidence we have. Thank you again to the local community for their ongoing patience and support.”
