From Homeless to Hero: Tania’s Incredible Rise

Tania Makwana, 31, has gone from homeless to headline hero after bagging The Prince’s Trust’s coveted ‘National Marvel Rising Star Award’. The London Assistant Ambulance Practitioner beat the odds to land the prize, which shines a light on young people smashing barriers to secure lasting jobs.

Star-Studded Ceremony at Drury Lane

The glitzy event at Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 24 May was hosted by none other than Ant and Dec. Tania accepted her award from Marvel legend Sir Ben Kingsley himself.

“What inspires me most about Tania’s story is her drive to support others through the London Ambulance Service after all she’s been through. Congratulations, Tania.” – Sir Ben Kingsley

Tania’s Harrowing Journey to Success

Her story is pure grit. Leaving home at 17, Tania faced homelessness and later survived a terrifying abusive relationship which saw her attacked with bleach. Thanks to police and social services, she escaped to a women’s refuge and rebuilt her life.

“Winning The Prince’s Trust’s Rising Star Award is something I never expected. I’m proud of my achievements and overwhelmed by this recognition. Sharing my story helps raise awareness for others facing similar battles,” Tania said.

Her breakthrough came during lockdown when an Instagram ad for The Prince’s Trust’s Get Started with the Ambulance Service programme caught her eye.

“It felt like a sign because I’ve always wanted to work for the ambulance service,” Tania revealed.

Living the Dream on the Frontline

Tania nailed the programme and interview, securing her dream job with London Ambulance Service in January last year – a moment decades in the making.

“As a little girl, I watched ambulance shows wishing someone would rescue me. Now, I rescue others and have rescued myself. At 31, this is the first time I’ve ever truly been happy – my life is only just beginning,” she said.

“Tania’s award is thoroughly deserved. She’s an inspiration to anyone facing tough times. We are proud to have her in our ‘green family’ and urge others to explore rewarding careers with us.” – Daniel Elkeles, London Ambulance Service Chief Executive
