Beware WhatsApp Scam That Locks You Out and Hits Your Contacts
How the WhatsApp Scam Works
Scammers hijack a WhatsApp account and target your contacts. They pose as your friend or a group member and strike up a chat. Almost simultaneously, you get a suspicious text with a six-digit code. That’s because the crook is trying to log in using your phone number.
The scammer then claims they sent you the code by mistake and begs you to share it. If you do, they gain full access to your WhatsApp and lock you out. Once inside, they repeat the trick on your contacts, spreading the fraud like wildfire.
Don’t Get Caught Out – Here’s What To Do
- Turn on two-step verification – Add an extra layer of security. Go to Settings > Account > Two-step Verification > Enable.
- STOP. THINK. CALL. If a mate or family member asks for anything odd on WhatsApp, phone them to make sure it’s legit.
- Never share your SMS activation codes. That six-digit number is private – keep it secret.
- Report spam or block suspicious senders. Press and hold the message bubble, tap ‘Report’ and follow the steps.
