Ex-Huddersfield Inspector Graham Dyson Back on the Beat as PSCO
Former Huddersfield Inspector Graham Dyson, a policing veteran since the days of Happy Mondays and Italia 90, is trading his retirement for patrol boots once again. He’s returned to Kirklees, taking on the role of Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) with the Batley and Spen Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Passion for Community Policing Drives His Comeback
Graham is buzzing to reconnect with local communities, saying, “Policing has always been a dream profession for me. I’m delighted to be back as a PCSO.”
He recalls, “I started working with PCSOs when they were first introduced in 2003 and loved how quickly they became the vital link between communities and Police.”
Impressive Career Full of Frontline Action
- Joined as a special constable in 1990, full-time PC from 1995
- 13 years in Bradford, climbed ranks to Inspector
- Spent time in Halifax and Leeds before leading Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team
- Tackled anti-social behaviour hotspots, including Huddersfield’s Walpole Estate
- Performed life-saving CPR five times on duty
- Received District Commander’s commendation for bravery providing first aid during a Huddersfield assault
Back to the Beat: A True ‘Proper Copper’
Graham says the best part about being a PCSO is the direct contact with residents. “PCSOs become a constant, identifiable presence. We reassure people by owning issues at the doorstep and building trust.”
“This role is exactly what I wanted 30 years ago — being out on the beat, meeting people, and being that visible presence my mum called ‘a proper copper’.”
Team Boss Welcomes a Policing Powerhouse
Inspector David Bates of Batley and Spen NPT said, “Graham brings a wealth of experience to the team and our communities. PCSOs and PCs are the lifeblood of local neighbourhood policing that residents want to see. It’s a pleasure to have Graham with us.”
“We are tackling ongoing issues in Batley and Spen and encourage residents to keep contacting us so officers like Graham can step in and make a real difference.”
