Four nabbed in massive drugs bust at Whitechapel’s Altab Ali Park
A major police crackdown on drug dealing near Altab Ali Park in Whitechapel has seen four suspects arrested this month, the Met Police confirmed.
Operation targets organised crime
The swoop was part of a long-running effort by the Met’s Specialist Crime Command and Tower Hamlets Neighbourhood Policing Teams. Their goal? To smash organised crime and make the park a safe, family-friendly zone again.
Detective Superintendent Vicky Tunstall, Tower Hamlets neighbourhood policing lead, said the raids followed months of careful planning and community intel gathering.
“Drug supply is often linked to violent crime and causes misery in our communities,” Tunstall said. “Targeted action helps reduce crime and improve life for residents, businesses and visitors in this culturally rich area.”
Regeneration plan underway
This crackdown forms part of a wider three-phase regeneration plan led by Tower Hamlets Council, working with police and local groups. The scheme includes:
- Clearing the park of crime and anti-social behaviour
- Keeping a strong police and security presence to deter offenders
- Building community resilience with events, partnerships and local projects
Two new food stalls have been added to encourage positive park use by locals and workers. Support services are also offered to offenders under Criminal Behaviour Orders, including mental health care, housing aid, and substance misuse treatment.
Community Safety Day spotlights progress
On June 5, the Met and council held a Community Safety Day at Altab Ali Park. Residents, businesses and neighbours joined forces to hear about ongoing efforts to tackle organised crime and discuss safety concerns.
“Altab Ali Park is a treasured part of our borough,” said Councillor Abu Talha Chowdhury, cabinet member for public protection. “We’re proud to see it becoming a safer, brighter space. This shows what’s possible when council, police and community work together to fight crime and create lasting change.”
Met vows to keep up the fight
The Met Police say challenges remain but progress is clear. They remain committed to working closely with partners and residents to make Whitechapel safer.
