Tragic Crash in Kirkby: Two Dead, One Seriously Injured
Police have launched an urgent investigation after a fatal smash on the M57 in Kirkby last night, Friday 3rd February.
Deadly Collision at Junction 6
At 9.10pm, emergency crews rushed to the scene where a Seat car collided with a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) near junction 6 on the southbound carriageway.
Two men in their twenties, from the Kirkby area, who were driving and travelling in the car, died instantly at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released, but next of kin have been informed and are receiving support.
Third Passenger in Hospital
A third man, also in his twenties and from Kirkby, was seriously injured and remains in hospital in a stable condition. The HGV driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police.
Road Closures and Police Appeal
The M57 is currently shut in both directions to allow detectives to carry out their investigations, which are expected to continue for some time.
“Our thoughts are with the families of the two men who lost their lives and the third man injured,” said Detective Sergeant Andy Roper from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit. “We are still in the early stages of the probe and urge anyone who was on the M57 between junctions 6 and 7 around 9pm and witnessed anything important, or who has dashcam footage, to get in touch.”
Motorists are advised to avoid the area while investigative work is ongoing. Police thank the public for their patience.
