Vandals Target Historic Roche Abbey Monument – Police Hunt Culprits

Police in Rotherham are urgently appealing for information after criminals damaged a historic monument at Roche Abbey earlier this month.

Crime Hits Protected Heritage Site

Between June 3rd and 4th, vandals caused damage to the lawn in front of the centuries-old monument. Roche Abbey is a protected site under the Ancient Monument and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, meaning any criminal damage is a serious offence.

Metal Detector Use Sparks Suspicion

PC Nathan Winder of Rotherham South Neighbourhood Policing Team revealed, “We believe someone was using a metal detector illegally at night before digging up the ground.”

Metal detecting on protected land is against the law and could lead to prosecution.

Police Call for Witnesses

“If you were near Roche Abbey during this time and noticed anything unusual, please come forward,” urged PC Winder.

Anyone with information should contact police via live chat online or call 101 quoting case number 14/105409/22.
