Outrage After Coventry Police Memorial Vandalised
Coventry police have launched an urgent appeal following the shocking destruction of a memorial plaque honouring PC Peter Charles Guthrie. The plaque, located on Far Gosford Street, was found smashed on April 7.
Remembering a Fallen Hero
PC Guthrie was just 21 and a newlywed when he was fatally shot while investigating an intruder alarm at a local shop on July 22, 1972. In recognition of his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for Gallantry. The memorial plaque was unveiled 50 years after his tragic death by the Police Memorial Trust.
Calls for Witnesses and Justice
Mrs Michael Winner, Chair of The Police Memorial Trust, condemned the vandalism and reassured PC Guthrie’s family and friends that a replacement plaque will be installed. She urged anyone with information about the attack to come forward and help bring the culprits to justice.
We do not know how the plaque was damaged, but we are determined to establish the details and will pursue all lines of inquiry,” said Detective Chief Inspector Adam Jobson of Coventry Police.
Community Furious Over Cold-Hearted Attack
The desecration has sparked outrage throughout Coventry. Residents are horrified by the callous disrespect shown to a fallen officer’s memory. Police are asking the public to call 0800 566 111 with any information that could aid the investigation.
