LA Sheriff’s Deputy Murder Suspect Caught After High-Stakes Manhunt
Los Angeles authorities have arrested a man linked to the shocking murder of Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, who was cold-bloodedly ambushed during a traffic stop. A hefty $250,000 reward was offered for tips leading to the case being cracked.
Deputy Gunned Down Outside Police Station
The deadly shooting happened on Saturday night in Palmdale, about 55 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Deputy Clinkunbroomer, just 30 years old, was fatally shot while sitting in his patrol car at a red light near a sheriff’s station.
Suspect Barricades Himself Before Arrest
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna revealed a 29-year-old Palmdale resident, Kevin Cataneo Salazar, was arrested early Monday. Salazar had locked himself inside his home for hours before surrendering after negotiations and the use of chemical agents by a SWAT team.
“I feel extremely confident that we have the right person in custody,” Sheriff Luna said. “Our deputy was in uniform in a marked black-and-white police vehicle right in front of the station. Why did he do this? I have no idea. Was he targeted? I’m assuming he was, but… our intent is to find out.”
Family Claims Suspect’s Mental Health Issues
Salazar’s mother, Marle Salazar, told the Los Angeles Times her son had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia about five years ago. She believes he was not in a sound mental state during the shooting.
“My son is mentally ill, and if he did something, he wasn’t in his full mental capacity,” she said.
