A Sunderland cyclist was left shaken after a violent, unprovoked assault on North Bridge Street at around 8:40am on Sunday, March 23. The attacker, riding a moped, reportedly hit the cyclist over the head and tried to push him off his bike while filming the savage attack.
Victim’s Wife Issues Heartfelt Plea
The cyclist’s wife took to social media shortly after, branding the attacker “a little piece of scum.” She warned local riders: “My husband was cycling along North Bridge Street when he was attacked by a little piece of scum on a moped. They hit him over the head and tried to push him off his bike while filming it.”
Though physically unharmed, the victim was left “visibly shaken,” his wife said. She also slammed passersby who failed to intervene. Her plea to witnesses: “If anyone was in the area and saw it or has dash cam footage, please help.”
Northumbria Police Launch Investigation
Police confirmed they are investigating the incident. So far, no suspect has been identified, but officers urge anyone in the area to check dash cams or provide eyewitness accounts. A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We take these incidents seriously. Anyone with dash cam footage or who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact us via 101 or upload material through the Dash Cam Safety Portal.”
The National Dash Cam Safety Portal, backed by Nextbase UK, is playing a key role in gathering evidence for such cases across the UK.
Cycling Community Outraged
The attack has sparked outrage online, especially among Sunderland’s cyclists. Many voiced fears about road safety and demanded a stronger police presence. The brazen attack, filmed by the assailant, has left locals alarmed and worried there’s a darker motive than simple intimidation.
