Man Fatally Stabbed on Cranwood Street in Early Hours
Police were called to Cranwood Street, EC1, around 3am on Tuesday, 26 December following reports of a stabbing. Officers and paramedics found a 49-year-old man with serious stab wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts, he died at the scene.
He has been named as Michael John Murphy. His family have been informed and continue to receive support from specialist officers.
Police Appeal for Witnesses After Boxing Day Stabbing
Detective Chief Inspector Kelly Allen of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said:
“We’re piecing together what led to Michael’s attack. There was an argument involving up to ten people on the street moments before the stabbing. We urge anyone who saw or heard anything on Boxing Day morning to come forward.”
Community and Police Urged to Help Crack the Case
Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, overseeing policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, commented:
“Our thoughts are with Michael’s family during this awful time. It’s shocking for something so tragic to happen over the Christmas period. Witnesses in the area must come forward to help us find those responsible.”
“Specialist detectives and local officers have been working at the scene since the incident, gathering vital evidence. We thank residents for their patience. Officers will continue to patrol locally—please speak to them or contact your Safer Neighbourhoods Team if you have any concerns.”
