Garden Blaze Sparks Chaos in Chelmsford – Seven Injured, Dozens of Homes Damaged
Flames ripped through Greenwood Close in Chelmsford, Essex, late Saturday night, after a garden fire leapt onto a row of conifers. The blaze quickly spread, engulfing neighbouring sheds, outbuildings, and gardens.
Seven Hurt as Fire Tears Through 15 Homes
Paramedics treated seven people at the scene. Essex Fire and Rescue confirmed the fire caused damage to the walls, windows, and guttering of 15 homes. Firefighters battled the inferno for over an hour, finally bringing it under control just after 11pm.
Dangerous Dry Conditions Fuel Fire Spread
According to Neil Fenwick, area manager for Essex Fire and Rescue Service, the ground across Essex is tinder-dry, making any flames a serious risk. “Summer is usually perfect for barbecues or evenings around a chiminea,” he said. “But right now, we’re strongly urging residents to avoid all fires.”
“Please, no barbecues or bonfires. Do not use fireworks or sky lanterns. This could cause a large-scale disaster like tonight’s fire.”
Investigation Underway as Fire Service Warns of Ongoing Risks
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Essex Fire and Rescue are investigating, while continuing to warn locals that the risk of a devastating fire is still high due to ongoing dry conditions across gardens, fields, and heathland.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant and steer clear of all open flames until conditions improve.
