Beware Fake Parking Fines Targeting Elderly Drivers in Kent!
Scam Uncovered: How Fraudsters Rip Off Elderly Motorists
Kent County Council’s Community Safety Partners have warned of a nasty scam hitting elderly drivers. Criminals, posing as police officers or traffic wardens, confront drivers while parked. They claim the victim has illegally parked or broken a speed limit, showing a fake photo “evidence.”
The scammer pressures victims to pay a small fee on the spot to avoid hefty fines. They then direct them to a tampered parking machine where they can swipe their card. While victims enter their PIN, the crook “shoulder surfs” and the machine traps their bank card.
How to Stay Safe and Avoid Falling Victim
- Don’t pay any suspicious fine without confirming it with your local council first.
- Dover District Council machines only sell Pay and Display tickets—not parking fines (Penalty Charge Notices).
- If parking in private lots, always check directly with the company.
- Keep your PIN shielded—never share it with anyone.
- If your card is retained by a machine, call your bank immediately to block payments.
- If you’ve been scammed, report it to Kent Police on 101 right away.
