Shock as Met Police Use Force on Teen in Abbey Wood Robbery Arrest
Chaos erupted in Abbey Wood, southeast London, on June 10 after police swooped on a group suspected of robbing a child. The youngster was threatened with a bottle, prompting a swift police response.
Video Shows Officers Punching and Kicking 16-Year-Old
Cultural commentator Carina White shared shocking footage showing officers punching and kicking a 16-year-old, who she says is “a friend of a friend’s son.” The video was shot from across the street, overlooking a garden.
“Hey Met Police, just wondering if detaining a 16-year-old child is a reasonable and appropriate use of force? Punching and kicking?” Ms White tweeted. “This was after school (he was on study leave for GCSEs) and he went to check on a friend after seeing police in his garden. The cops weren’t even there to help him.”
Suspect Arrested but Out on Bail
Police confirmed property stolen during the incident was found at the address. One 16-year-old tried to run but was caught and arrested for robbery and possession of an offensive weapon. He has since been released on bail while investigations continue.
A Met Police spokesperson said the officers’ conduct, including bodycam footage, will be reviewed by professional standards. “All Met officers know any use of force must be justified and proportionate,” they added. “They will be held accountable.”
Public Outrage Over Police Tactics
The video has sparked fury online. One Twitter user fumed, “I’m fuming because he’s down and they’re still dropping blows.” Another blasted, “How are they going to assault a teenager like that?”
