Worthing Sex Offender Jailed for 31 Months After SHPO Breach
Kevin Challen, 55, a registered sex offender from Worthing, was locked up for 31 months after flouting his Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). Originally convicted in March 2021 for possessing indecent images of children, Challen received a 10-month suspended sentence, was added to the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years, and given strict SHPO restrictions.
Deceived Family Friends to Contact 12-Year-Old
Ignoring his court-imposed restrictions, Challen lied to family friends to gain access to a 12-year-old child. He began messaging the youngster, breaching his SHPO. The child bravely told their parents, leading to a fresh investigation by Sussex Police.
Guilty Plea and Tough Sentence at Lewes Crown Court
After a thorough probe, Challen was charged with three breaches of his SHPO and failing to comply with Sex Offenders Register rules. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on 15 March. The judge handed down 31 months in prison and extended his SHPO indefinitely.
Crime Investigator Hails Child’s Bravery
Dawn Hosken, crime investigator, praised the child for speaking out and thanked witnesses for their vital support. “Challen is now where he belongs – behind bars,” she said.
