Shock Find at New Scotland Yard Sparks Investigation Fiasco

An unexpected discovery in a long-forgotten locked cabinet at New Scotland Yard has sent shockwaves through the investigation into the Daniel Morgan murder case. Crucial documents, hidden away for years, were only uncovered this year, prompting serious questions about how vital information was mishandled.

Missing Documents Could Have Changed the Game

The Metropolitan Police began a thorough review as soon as the papers surfaced. Early findings reveal that some documents should have been handed over to the Daniel Morgan Independent Panel (DMIP) before its final report in June 2021. This omission breaches established disclosure rules and spells trouble for the force.

“We fully acknowledge how unacceptable and deeply regrettable this situation is,” said Assistant Commissioner Barbara Gray. “We are working to understand what has taken place and any impact. We apologize to the family of Daniel Morgan and to the Panel.”

95 Pages Missing from DMIP – 71 More Should Have Gone to HMICFRS

The Met identified 95 pages spread across 37 documents that should have been disclosed to DMIP. On top of that, 71 pages in 23 documents, earmarked for the Inspectorate’s inspection, were also missing. However, police say none of the papers contain evidence relating to the murder investigation itself — some consolation amid the controversy.

Family, Oversight Bodies to Get Full Disclosure

Since the January discovery, the Met has kept key agencies in the loop, including His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS), the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), the Home Office, and the Mayor’s Office for Policing.

The police have contacted Daniel Morgan’s family and Baroness Nuala O’Loan, providing full details and outlining the next steps. The documents will undergo an independent inspection by HMICFRS to scrutinise the Met’s handling of the disclosure.

The Met has pledged full transparency, promising the family and Baroness O’Loan access to any documents that should have been shared with DMIP in the first place.

This saga raises serious doubts about years of evidence handling — and whether justice for Daniel Morgan’s murder has been hampered by bureaucratic bungling.
