Two Elderly Women Targeted in Brighouse Purse Thefts
West Yorkshire Police have launched an urgent probe after two older women were pickpocketed in Brighouse’s busy Commercial Street. CCTV snaps of the suspects involved have been released as the hunt heats up.
How the Thefts Happened
The incidents took place on January 25 in the heart of Brighouse’s popular shopping area. Both victims, strangers to each other, were quietly robbed of their purses while going about their day.
“Both women were going about their day when they discovered their purses had been taken without their knowledge,” said a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson. “These incidents are deeply concerning, particularly as they target vulnerable members of our community.”
The Calderdale District Investigation Team are leading the inquiry. CCTV footage shows two suspects lingering near elderly shoppers, shadowing them before striking.
Community Shock and Calls for Action
Brighouse locals are rattled by the brazen crimes.
“It’s frightening to think that people are targeting the elderly like this,” said 72-year-old resident Margaret Ellis. “We come here to shop and socialise, not to worry about someone stealing from us.”
Shop owners are also pushing for tougher police presence.
“We want our customers to feel safe,” said bakery owner Tom Parker. “These kinds of crimes make people think twice before coming into town.”
Police Plea: Spot the Suspects?
West Yorkshire Police urge anyone recognising the suspects or who spotted suspicious activity on January 25 to step forward. Even small tips could crack the case.
“We’re particularly interested in hearing from anyone with dashcam or CCTV from Commercial Street around the time of the thefts,” said Detective Inspector Sarah Holden of the Calderdale Investigation Team.
Call West Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting crime reference 1325003872, or report anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
Stay Safe, Shoppers
- Keep purses zipped and close to your body.
- Stay alert in crowds.
- Carry minimal cash and valuables.
- Report suspicious behaviour immediately.
Police Ramp Up Patrols
As the hunt continues, patrols around Brighouse have intensified to protect shoppers and put crooks off.
“We understand the impact on victims and the community,” added DI Holden. “We’re determined to bring those responsible to justice.”
Be vigilant, Brighouse – help police catch these purse thieves before they strike again.
