Man Arrested After Victim Set on Fire Near Birmingham Mosque
West Midlands Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after a shocking assault in Birmingham. The victim was sprayed with an unknown substance that ignited his jacket, leaving him with burns to his face.
Burns Sustained in Edgbaston Attack
The incident occurred just after 7 p.m. on Monday as the victim walked home from a mosque on Shenstone Road, Edgbaston. His jacket caught fire, causing serious but non-life-threatening facial burns. He was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Possible Link to Similar Attack in West London
Police are probing whether this attack is connected to a similar blaze in west London. An 82-year-old man was set on fire outside the West London Islamic Centre on Singapore Road on February 27 at around 8 p.m., according to Metropolitan Police.
Police Hunting Suspects, Seeking Community Help
“We’re examining CCTV and speaking to witnesses and are determined to find out who is responsible,” said Re Supt James Spencer.
“I’ve been talking to people this morning and I know how concerned they are and how eager they are for answers.”
“We are determined to find the person responsible and obtain those answers as soon as possible. I would encourage the community to collaborate with us and avoid speculation at this stage.”
Chief Supt Richard North added, “Our investigation continues with support from Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands CTU who have specialist capabilities to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We have officers patrolling the neighbourhood to reassure residents and are visiting local faith institutions to keep them informed.”
Extra police officers will be deployed in the area to communicate with residents and boost local security as the investigation intensifies.
