Tragic Peckham Death: Jason Bent Killed by HGV on Busy High Street
Jason Bent Dies in Horrific Collision
Jason Bent, 48, was killed instantly after being struck by a heavy goods vehicle close to Burger King on Peckham High Street. The father-of-one was on his way to a job interview when disaster struck.
Family Heartbroken at the Scene
Jason’s mother, Mary Bent, broke down in tears as she told how she had just said goodbye to her son that morning. “He might be dead but he is not gone,” she said. Jason was well-known around Peckham as a cheeky, popular lad. His sister Teresa described him as “a good man.”
Witnesses tried desperately to lift the lorry off Jason, who was still talking but badly injured—but sadly, he died at the scene.
Police Continue Investigation
The lorry involved, from West Yorkshire, remains under police examination. Metropolitan Police confirmed they were called at 12:58pm on 8 January to the crash involving a pedestrian.
The driver has not been arrested and is cooperating with inquiries. The road in both directions is closed, with motorists urged to take alternative routes.
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to come forward. Contact them on 101 quoting CAD 3432/8 Jan.
Family Await Answers
Mary Bent said, “The police aren’t telling us much yet. It’s all very raw and hasn’t sunk in.” Jason had been living with his mother and was heading to a job centre interview when tragedy struck.
“I called him back and said goodbye, told him to look after himself,” Mary added. “It was like I knew something was going to happen.”
