Met Boosts Investigators to Win Back Londoners’ Trust
The Met has ramped up efforts to clean up its act. On November 1, they deployed 50 extra investigators to the Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) to tackle abuse of trust within the force.
300 Sexual Misconduct and Domestic Abuse Cases Under Review
Nearly 300 ongoing investigations into sexual misconduct and domestic abuse involving Met officers and staff are under urgent review. This massive audit started already and is set to wrap up by Spring 2022.
Additionally, police are dip-sampling 100 cases—ten cases per year over the last decade—including vetting checks. This review is also expected to finish by Spring 2022.
Baroness Casey Leads Culture Overhaul
The Met announced a sweeping review of its culture and standards, led by Baroness Casey of Blackstock. The terms of reference are now published, with work kicking off in January 2022.
There’s also a separate probe into the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command underway, due to finish by mid-2022.
An oversight group co-chaired by Dee Collins, former Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, and Assistant Commissioner Matt Jukes will ensure external scrutiny throughout the reviews.
Commander Rachel Williams Promises Real Change
“We’ve heard loud and clear the dismay and disappointment from Londoners, especially women, over whether they can trust us to keep them safe. Trust is fundamental to our mission.”
“We are not waiting for inquiry results to act. Significant changes have already started, and we’ll keep improving wherever we spot opportunities.”
“Our dedication to Londoners is rock solid. We continue fighting violent crime, especially violence against women and girls, with new action plans disrupting offenders, boosting safety, and supporting victims.”
“Knife and gun crimes dropped 26%, personal robbery down 25% in the last year. We’re putting officers where they’re needed most and using cutting-edge technology to solve complex crimes.”
“We’re here, we’re changing, we’re learning. We won’t stop until Londoners get the police service they deserve.”
