Fire crews rush to QA Hospital in Cosham amid burning smell scare
Five fire engines from Southsea, Cosham, Porchester, and St Mary’s were scrambled to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham this morning following reports of a burning smell coming from the air conditioning system.
Alarm sounded after burning smell detected
Crews were called out just after 11.30am when an automatic fire alarm triggered at the hospital. The source of the smell is believed to be on Level D inside the building.
Hospital remains open as firefighters search the site
There have been no confirmed evacuations so far. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus and thermal imaging cameras, are conducting thorough searches of the hospital grounds. Meanwhile, police have shut the main road leading into the hospital for safety.
Fire crews suspect nearby works or bonfire caused smoke
A spokesman from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that no fires have been found inside the hospital. They believe the alarm was sparked by smoke from nearby building works or a bonfire rather than an actual blaze.
Additional officers and support vehicles from the fire service headquarters are also at the scene as investigations continue.
