Huge Fire Erupts at Derelict Building in Southampton
Fire crews from across Southampton rushed to tackle a fierce blaze tearing through a derelict building on the city outskirts this lunchtime.
Thick Black Smoke Clouds Freemantle Skies
A massive column of black smoke billowed from Waterloo Road in Freemantle around 12:10pm on Monday, April 26, as firefighters armed with breathing apparatus and hose reels battled the inferno.
The building is believed to be used as shelter by some members of the homeless community. Firefighters launched a full search to ensure no one was trapped inside.
Road Closures and Multiple Emergency Services on Scene
Three fire engines from St Mary’s, Eastleigh, and Cosham attended the blaze, alongside one ambulance from South Central Ambulance Service. Hampshire Police closed Waterloo Road near the junctions with Vara Road and Park Road in both directions for safety.
The fire, which firefighters contained mainly to a shed, left the adjoining two-storey building with smoke damage but intact. Police confirmed the blaze is not being treated as suspicious.
A Hampshire spokesperson said: “We were called just after midday to reports of a fire on Waterloo Road, Southampton. Officers were in attendance to assist Hampshire Fire and Rescue as they dealt with the fire. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.”
