Tragic Helicopter Crash Claims Polish Couple on Isle of Wight
The first photo of the Polish family who died in a devastating helicopter crash on the Isle of Wight over Bank Holiday Monday has been released.
Victims Named Locally
Locals have identified the victims as a beloved Polish mother and her partner, both in their 50s. They were aboard the Robinson R55 helicopter that crashed in a field off the A3020 Shanklin Road shortly after 9.20am on 25 August.
The aircraft had just taken off from Sandown Airport when it spiralled out of control and slammed into the ground near Whitely Bank. Two other passengers remain in hospital, with one in critical condition.
Family Heartbroken and Fundraising
“On 25 August, our beloved mum and her partner tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on the Isle of Wight. This sudden and devastating event has left us heartbroken and struggling to cope with the loss. We are now trying to bring them both back to Poland so they can be laid to rest with their families, in the place they called home.”
Relatives have launched a fundraising campaign to cover the repatriation and funeral costs, saying the family cannot shoulder the financial burden alone.
Eyewitnesses Describe Horror; Emergency Crews Rush In
Witnesses reported the helicopter spiralling before crashing. Emergency teams quickly arrived, with paramedics and firefighters fighting to save lives. Sadly, the couple died instantly at the scene.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has opened a full probe to find out what caused the crash.
Community Left Stunned
The tragedy struck during one of the island’s busiest holiday weekends, shocking both locals and the Polish community. Floral tributes have started to appear near the crash site.
First responders pulled four individuals from the wreckage and began CPR, some risking injury from debris. A total of three people were confirmed dead at the scene and one remains critically injured in Southampton General Hospital.
Emergency services involved included Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, ambulance crews, flying medics, and HM Coastguard.
Donna Jones, Police and Crime Commissioner, said:
“My deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the three people who tragically lost their lives in the helicopter crash this morning. My thoughts are also with the fourth individual who remains in hospital in a critical condition.
This is a devastating incident that has deeply shocked the local community. The families affected are being supported during this incredibly difficult time.
I want to thank all of our emergency services for their swift and dedicated response, including Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, and hospital staff.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has now launched a formal investigation into the crash, and we await further details as they work to understand what happened.
This is a heartbreaking day for the Isle of Wight, and my thoughts remain firmly with everyone affected.”
Joe Robertson, MP for Isle of Wight East, commented:
“My heart goes out to the families of those who lost their lives in the helicopter crash outside Shanklin today.
It is very sad and tragic news during what should have been a happy bank holiday helicopter flight from Sandown Airport. The whole community is in shock.
My sincere thanks to all the emergency services personnel who have been involved and to the investigators for their work ahead.”
