Scam Alert: Fraudsters Target Overseas Students and Visitors in UK with Fake Police Threats
Fake Cops Demand Cash to Avoid Arrest and Deportation
Scammers are ringing up or messaging overseas students and visitors in the UK, pretending to be law enforcement officers—sometimes claiming links to embassies or foreign governments. They tell victims they’re caught up in crimes like money laundering, fraud, or immigration offences, backed by fake documents or parcels as “evidence.”
Then comes the twist: the fraudsters demand personal details, including your current address and copies of your ID. They threaten with arrest warrants, deportation, or jail unless you pay up to cancel the charges or fines.
Don’t Fall for It: Police Will Never Demand Money
Once the victim pays, the scammers vanish without a trace. Remember, real police never ask you to transfer money or withdraw cash for checks or arrest cancellations.
Protect yourself—never share personal or financial info with anyone claiming to be law enforcement without verifying their identity. Question strange requests and refuse to comply.
Spot a Scam? Here’s What to Do
- If you’ve paid someone pretending to be police or a government official, report it immediately to Action Fraud, the UK’s fraud reporting centre, open 24/7.
- For advice on fraud or cybercrime, call 0300 123 2040.
- Students should also contact their university or Student Union for guidance and support.
Stay alert and keep your details safe. Don’t let scammers ruin your time in the UK.
