Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run on Portsmouth’s Winston Churchill Avenue
Tragedy struck late Tuesday night in Portsmouth’s Sommers Town area when a woman was fatally hit by a vehicle. Hampshire Police have launched a full investigation after the driver fled the scene.
Emergency Services Rush to Scene
Police and paramedics arrived swiftly on Winston Churchill Avenue following reports of the incident at 9.32pm on August 3. Despite their best efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road has been closed in both directions from Victoria Road North to Isambard Brunel Road, with a forensic team setting up a blue and white tent as officers scour the area for clues.
Hit-and-Run Driver Still at Large
Witnesses say the driver failed to stop after hitting the woman, abandoning her injured on the road. The Hampshire Constabulary Road Policing Collision Investigation Unit has taken charge of the probe, promising a thorough forensic examination to track down the culprit.
Police Appeal to Public
“We advise motorists and pedestrians to avoid Winston Churchill Avenue and seek alternative routes while the investigation is ongoing,” a Hampshire Police spokesperson said.
“Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information is urged to call 101 quoting reference 2091 of August 3.”
