Fatal Blaze in Tooting Sparks Joint Fire and Police Probe
A deadly fire tore through a Terrace home on Fountain Road, Tooting, sparking a major investigation by London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police.
Flames Rip Through Home Near St George’s Hospital
Emergency services rushed to the scene just after 11pm on Wednesday following reports of smoke and fire. Locals raised the alarm as smoke billowed from the building, trapping residents inside.
One distressed local, who helped the family move in less than a week ago, said: “I was beaten back by the smoke and couldn’t get inside. I had to wait for the fire service.
Woman Found Dead, Others Injured
Tragically, a woman in her 40s was discovered dead on the ground floor. Curtains on the first floor were burned away, and neighbours reported others were hurt in the blaze.
Fire Brigade and Police Launch Arson Investigation
Specialist London Fire Brigade fire investigators (FIT) are working alongside Met Police crime scene officers to determine the fire’s cause. A crime scene remains in place.
A Met Police spokesman said: “Police were called by London Fire Brigade at approximately 11.15pm on Wednesday, 7 July, to reports of a fire at a residential address in Fountain Road, SW17. The body of a woman, believed to be aged in her 40s, was found deceased inside. Next of kin have been informed.”
“While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, at this early stage police are not treating the incident as suspicious. Enquiries are ongoing.”
