Heathrow Chaos as Just Stop Oil Storms Terminal 5 in Bold Climate Protest
Heathrow Shaken by Climate Warriors
Just Stop Oil activists caused havoc at Heathrow Airport for the second week running. At 8:50am, six campaigners blocked access to Terminal 5 South departure gates, waving placards screaming “Oil Kills” and “Sign the Treaty.” Police swiftly swooped, arresting the six protesters, plus a filmer and at least ten others on public transport.
Veteran Activists Among Those Arrested
Among those detained was grandma Di Bligh, 77, former Reading Borough Council CEO. “Climate breakdown threatens everything we love,” she warned. “Starvation and forced migration will explode unless governments unite.” Bligh slammed half-measures, adding: “Electric cars and wind farms alone won’t cut it. We need a global fossil fuel treaty to end oil, gas, and coal extraction by 2030.”
Also nabbed was Somerset’s Ruth Cook, 72, who pleaded for urgent action: “We can’t pretend the climate crisis isn’t real. Droughts, floods, wildfires are killing people now. I’m fighting for my grandchildren and all kids’ futures. We need to stop fossil fuels by 2030.”
Global Uprising Hits Airports Worldwide
The UK’s Heathrow stunt echoes protests in Germany, where five Last Generation activists glued themselves to Leipzig-Halle’s runway to block cargo flights. The international blitz spans 21 groups in 12 countries targeting 20 airports—from Norway and Spain to Canada and the USA.
Climate Catastrophe Ignites Fire Under Protesters
This week delivered the four hottest days ever recorded globally. Devastating flooding and mudslides have killed dozens in Asia and Africa. Half of Jasper, Canada, lies in ashes. Climate experts warn humanity is barreling toward irreversible chaos.
“The extreme events we’re seeing signal nature’s weakening resilience,” said Potsdam Institute’s Johan Rockström. “We can’t risk pushing further.”
“We’re dancing on a very dangerous climate edge,” added Brown University scientist Kim Cobb.
More Arrests; Pressure Mounts on Politicians
Yesterday, campaigners Phoebe Plummer and Jane Touil joined 14 other peaceful protesters jailed in the UK. The Oil Kills international rebellion promises to ramp up civil resistance at key fossil fuel sites worldwide this summer, demanding governments act now before the climate crisis spirals out of control.
