Crackdown on Human Trafficking Hits Canterbury Nail Bars and Car Washes

Last week, Kent Police teamed up with Canterbury City Council, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS), The Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, and charity Stop the Traffik to tackle modern slavery. The joint operation took place on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 July 2021—World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

Warning Given to 80 Workers and Managers

The taskforce visited 20 nail bars and car washes, speaking directly to more than 80 employees and managers. They handed out crucial advice on legal rights and the dangers of human trafficking. Victims and workers were offered a safe space to confidentially discuss their concerns.

During the operation, KFRS slapped a prohibition notice on one premises for serious safety violations, sending a clear message on workplace standards.

Kent Police Vow to Keep the Pressure On

Kent Police Sergeant Lee Thompson of the Community Safety Unit said: “We are determined to protect the most vulnerable. We will run more of these operations regularly to build trust, gather intelligence, and act against offenders.”

“We want every worker to know their rights and who to contact if they face modern slavery or spot someone in trouble.”

Council’s Fight Against Slavery and Shoddy Housing

Canterbury City Council’s lead housing councillor, Joe Howes, said: “We’re proud to support this vital project. Many forced workers also live in unsafe, poor-quality housing.”

“This operation helped us uncover critical intel on unsafe properties locally and beyond. We’ll be working with other councils to follow up swiftly.”
