A man calling 999 in distress early one June morning refused to reveal his location, sparking a tense police search. But thanks to Amber from the Force Control Room, disaster was averted.

Amber kept the man calm during his medical episode, persuading him to start walking home while staying on the line. Despite him ending the call twice, she immediately rang back and spent over an hour talking him down.
She chatted about anything to distract him from self-harm and listened carefully for police sirens, ready to guide officers to his exact spot. Her quick thinking and calm approach made all the difference.
Police Praise Amber’s Extraordinary Skills
Eventually, Amber pinpointed his location and directed officers straight to him. The man safely approached the police, grateful to Amber and the responding officers for their help.
“Amber has demonstrated excellent skills by quickly assessing the risks and using her initiative to build a rapport with someone in desperate need,” said Amber’s manager, Simon Hardware. “Her knowledge and intervention prevented a potentially fatal outcome.”
“Managing situations like this under pressure isn’t easy. While our handlers are trained for such moments, Amber’s extraordinary efforts deserve special recognition,” he added.
The attending sergeant also praised Amber’s professionalism, saying, “I’ve worked with Amber before, and she always does an excellent job.”
