Operation Sceptre Cracks Down on Knife Crime in Kent

From Monday 9 to Sunday 15 November 2020, Operation Sceptre is back with a bang, targeting knife crime across Kent’s streets. Police will ramp up efforts in hotspots like Medway, Thanet, Maidstone, and Sheerness. Expect knife arches in public spaces and a surge in stop-and-search checks as officers hunt down those carrying deadly blades.

Officers on a Mission to Slash Knife Crime

Detective Superintendent Mike Worrall said: “Operation Sceptre is a national campaign happening twice a year. It boosts the ongoing efforts of our officers to cut knife crime in our communities. Despite new Covid restrictions, some still carry knives – this won’t be tolerated. Arresting and prosecuting offenders is a top priority.”

Tackling ‘Rambo’ Knives and Gangs

Officers aren’t working alone. British Transport Police will patrol train stations, while UK Border Force investigates the import of ‘Rambo’ or ‘Survival’ knives bought online from abroad. Though legal to import, these weapons are linked to gangs and street violence. Police will use intelligence to visit addresses where vulnerable people may need support or safeguarding.

Educating Youth to Stay Knife-Free

During the week, officers will also visit schools to educate youngsters on the dangers of carrying knives. Det Supt Worrall warned: “We won’t be complacent on knife crime. Carrying a blade, even for protection, puts you at risk of becoming a victim. Taking knives off the streets allows us to tackle related crimes like county lines drug supply. Both uniformed and plain-clothed officers will be out in force, patrolling to catch and deter habitual knife carriers.”
