Knife-Wielding Man Shot After Stun Grenade, Baton Round, and Taser Fail
A 35-year-old Romanian man armed with a knife was shot dead by police in a dramatic showdown outside a Derby police station, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has revealed.
Marius Ciolac was tackled with a multi-bang stun grenade, a baton round, and a Taser before officers fired a fatal single shot to his abdomen in the car park of Ascot Drive police station.
Chaos Erupts Outside Derby Police Station
- Incident began at 9.55am on Friday after officers spotted Ciolac wielding a knife and smashing glass at the station entrance.
- Armed officers from a response vehicle were called in to deal with the dangerous scene.
- Multiple attempts to stop Ciolac failed, forcing police to use deadly force at 10.30am.
- Three knives were recovered at the scene.
- Despite first aid and paramedics rushing him to Nottingham hospital, Ciolac later died.
IOPC Investigation Underway – Family Contacted
IOPC regional director Derrick Campbell said:
“We have made contact with Mr Ciolac’s family in Romania and Italy to explain our role, and our heartfelt sympathies are with them and everyone else affected by this tragic incident.”
Campbell urged the public to hold back from speculation, saying:
“While it is natural for people to want answers quickly, we ask patience and respect for Mr Ciolac’s family and all involved. We are committed to a full and thorough investigation.”
The IOPC has gathered initial accounts from officers and witnesses, examined CCTV footage, and is reviewing police bodycam videos. They are also reaching out to potential public witnesses to assist with the inquiry.
