17-Hour Armed Standoff Ends in Lewisham
Knife-Wielding Man Sparks Massive Police Operation
A tense 17-hour armed police standoff in Lewisham finally ended today as lockdown restrictions were lifted. It all kicked off at 10:45 a.m. yesterday after reports emerged of a man waving a knife and shouting from a window on Lewisham High Street.
Armed officers quickly sealed off parts of the town centre. A police cordon remained in place throughout the day while negotiators tried to calm the man and establish if others were inside the property.
Police Enter Property But Arrest Status Unclear
By 7 p.m., the Metropolitan Police confirmed no one else was believed to be inside. Officers reportedly entered the premises late last night, but the Met has not confirmed if anyone was arrested.
Social media clips showing officers gaining entry have circulated, though these remain unverified.
Lockdown Lifted, Roads Reopen
Lewisham Council confirmed the cordons were fully lifted early this morning, allowing residents back into their homes and businesses to resume trading. The closure severely disrupted traffic, with Lewisham High Street shut between Lee High Road, Belmont Hill, and Rennell Street. Nearby roads including Lee High Road and Molesworth Street experienced severe congestion.
Investigation Ongoing
The Metropolitan Police have yet to release a full update on the incident’s outcome or indicate if the man was taken into custody.
Authorities say more details will follow as the investigation continues in this developing story.
