Lidl Rolls Out Body Cameras for All Staff in Groundbreaking £2m Safety Push
Lidl is upping the ante on security with plans to equip every UK staff member with body cameras. The supermarket giant is pumping over £2 million into this bold move to protect employees and shoppers alike, with full rollout set for Spring 2024.
Body Cameras to Hit 960+ Stores Nationwide by November
Starting late November, Lidl’s 960-plus stores will be kitted out with body cams. This makes Lidl the first major retailer in the UK to commit to such widespread use of the tech, going beyond limited trials or optional devices seen elsewhere.
Staff will get thorough training to handle the cameras responsibly while respecting privacy concerns.
CEO Ryan McDonnell Stresses Safety Amid Retail Crime Surge
“Safety and security has always been an absolute priority for us,” said Ryan McDonnell, Lidl GB CEO. “While our stores are typically safe, retail crime is affecting the entire industry. Our investment in body-worn cameras is one way we’re protecting and reassuring our colleagues and customers.”
Lidl Joins Forces in Retail Crime Fight with Project Pegasus
Beyond cameras, Lidl became a founding member of Project Pegasus last October. The initiative unites businesses, police, and the Home Office to tackle serious organised retail crime.
Lidl has pledged £60,000 over two years to support the project. McDonnell added, “It’s vital the industry unites to find innovative ways to combat rising retail crime. Project Pegasus offers a real chance for retailers, police, and government to work hand in hand.”
Lidl’s safety drive looks set to create a safer, more secure shopping experience across the country — and send a strong message to criminals targeting retail workers.
