57 Fall Ill After Chemical Leak Sparks Maidstone Farm Lockdown

Maidstone, Kent – Chaos erupted at a Maidstone farm yesterday after a suspected chemical leak left 57 people struggling to breathe. Emergency crews rushed to the scene at Rumwood Green Farm industrial estate, locking down the area and launching a major response.

Hazardous Leak Hits Industrial Estate

The alarm was raised just after 2:30pm on Wednesday when carbon monoxide was detected at the industrial site near Sutton Road, Langley. Kent Fire and Rescue Service deployed seven fire crews along with hazardous materials experts to tackle the situation.

A spokesman confirmed numerous people suffered breathing difficulties, prompting paramedics to treat 57 victims at the site. An air ambulance also landed nearby to speed up medical support.

Emergency Forces Work Round the Clock

By 5pm, firefighters were still battling to confirm the exact nature of the chemical involved. Police, fire crews, and ambulance teams set up a perimeter, keeping nearby residents and businesses away from the contaminated zone.

Kent Police was called by South East Coast Ambulance Service at 2:49pm following reports of a suspected chemical leak. Officers remain on scene offering assistance where needed,” a police representative said.

Hospital Care and Ongoing Support

Four patients have been taken to hospital – one to Pembury and three to Maidstone Hospital. Meanwhile, the majority of those affected have been moved to a rest centre for treatment and welfare support.

Chris Stamp, Strategic Commander for SECAmb, praised emergency services’ swift response:

“This was a prolonged incident involving many patients. I extend my sympathy to those affected and commend all crews for their hard work. We are working closely with partners to care for everyone impacted.”

Incident Now Contained

By Wednesday evening, the Major Incident declaration was stood down, though emergency teams remain vigilant. The site remains under lockdown as investigations continue into the cause of the chemical leak.
