Man Set Ablaze in Shocking Times Square Attack

Horrific Blaze Erupts in Midtown Manhattan

A 45-year-old man suffered severe burns to his face and arms after being deliberately set on fire early Sunday morning in Times Square, Manhattan. The attack happened at 3:55am near Broadway and West 41st Street, just steps from one of the world’s busiest pedestrian hotspots.

Police say the victim told officers a man approached him, doused him with an unknown liquid, and then set him alight. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

Chaos on the Streets: Fire Extinguisher and Debris Left Behind

Photos from the scene show a red fire extinguisher, a jacket, and other debris scattered across the sidewalk as investigators scoured the area for clues. The victim, shirtless and visibly shaken, was wrapped in a blanket and taken by firefighters before being rushed to hospital.

He is now being treated at New York Presbyterian Cornell Hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

Public Horror and Police Appeal

Local resident Steve Ortiz told reporters,

“I don’t understand, just very inhumane. Especially in the middle of Times Square—it’s crazy, it doesn’t make any sense.”

The motive behind the attack remains a mystery. Police have not revealed if the assault was targeted or random. The suspect is described only as a man last seen wearing blue clothing.

The incident happened just hours before the NYC Half Marathon brought crowds nearby, sparking concerns over safety in the heart of the city.

Remembering Another Deadly Arson

This terrifying attack comes less than three months after 61-year-old homeless woman Debrina Kawam was burned to death in a separate subway arson incident. That tragedy shocked New Yorkers and highlighted rising concerns about violent crimes involving fire.

Investigation Underway – Police Seek Witnesses

The NYPD Crime Scene Unit is tirelessly investigating. Officers are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby stores and traffic cameras to identify the suspect.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
