Lewes Bonfire Night: Major Road Closures and Train Disruptions

Lewes is gearing up for its annual Bonfire Night, but this year comes with extra safety measures. Road closures and parking restrictions are set to keep the crowds under control and ensure the event goes off without a hitch.

Train Services Cancelled Due to Strikes

Train timetables had already been tweaked for safety reasons. But with national strike action hitting on November 5, there will now be no trains running to Lewes or nearby stations. Attendees will need to plan alternative travel.

Overcrowding Worries in Tight Streets

Emergency services, local councils, and transport operators have been prepping for months. Still, concerns about dangerous overcrowding in Lewes’ narrow streets remain high.

Tim Whelan, Lewes District Council: “We work closely with crowd control experts to spot potential trouble spots. Stewards will be on hand to guide people away from busy areas. We ask everyone to follow advice to stay safe.”

Safety Concerns Backed by Injury Stats

Since 2010, nearly 900 injuries have been reported—many caused by bangers and fireworks along the procession routes.

Doug Marshall, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service: “We urge locals to attend their own fireworks displays instead of coming to Lewes. Crowded streets make emergency responses tough. Remember the Fireworks Code to keep everyone safe.”

Police Ready to Crack Down on Trouble

Chief Superintendent Howard Hodges: “Sussex Police will support stewards and security teams, especially around road closures and the town centre. Report anything suspicious to stewards or officers. Always call 999 in an emergency.

“Each year, we make arrests for assaults, criminal damage, and drug offences. That behaviour won’t be tolerated. We’re working hard with partners to make sure everyone can enjoy a safe night.”

Road Closures & Parking Rules

  • Road closures start at 4pm around key junctions, including the A27/A277 Ashcombe Roundabout, A275 Offham Road/B2116 Plumpton Road, C7 Kingston Road/C324 Wellgreen Lane, and A26 junctions with A2029 Malling Street and Malling Hill/Church Lane.
  • Lewes residents should park vehicles before 4pm to avoid lock-in.
  • Visitors are strongly advised not to bring cars into town.
  • Parking restrictions kick in from noon on the big day.

Plan ahead and stay safe to enjoy the iconic Lewes Bonfire Night celebration!
