The Scottish Government and National Records of Scotland have teamed up to introduce a heartfelt Memorial Book for families who have lost babies before 24 weeks of pregnancy. This free, optional service offers a physical keepsake to honour and remember those tiny lives.

During a visit to baby loss charity Held In Our Hearts, First Minister Humza Yousaf highlighted the deep impact of losing a baby at any stage. The Memorial Book includes a record of the loss plus a special commemorative certificate — giving parents much-needed recognition and comfort.
Charities Praise Move to Recognise Early Pregnancy Loss
Nicola Welsh, Chief Executive of Held In Our Hearts, praised the new initiative: “Families often feel isolated and heartbroken after losing a much-wanted baby. This Memorial Book allows them to officially add their little one’s name to the National Records of Scotland.”
Clea Harmer, Chief Executive of Sands and Chair of the Baby Loss Awareness Alliance, welcomed the launch: “It’s crucial we acknowledge these precious lives, no matter how brief.”
