Swastikas Spray-Painted in Children’s Playground Sparks Hate Crime Probe

The Met Police have launched a hate crime investigation after swastikas were found daubed across playground equipment in Clissold Park, Hackney. The shocking graffiti was reported on Sunday, April 21 — the final day of Passover — sparking outrage among locals and community leaders.

Residents Outraged as Nazi Symbols Deface Family Park

Photos circulating on social media show the offensive Nazi symbols sprayed all over the play area in Stoke Newington’s popular family park. The vile act has been condemned as “abhorrent” and prompted an urgent response from both the police and Hackney Council.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “This incident has been recorded as a hate crime due to swastika symbols being painted on the park equipment. Enquiries remain ongoing.”

The force confirmed the vandalism is being treated as criminal damage motivated by hate. They have called on anyone with information to come forward to help catch those responsible.

Council Acts Fast to Clean Up Offensive Graffiti

Hackney Council sent cleaning teams out late Sunday and again Monday morning to remove every trace of the hateful graffiti. Mayor Caroline Woodley took to X (formerly Twitter) to reassure worried residents:

“I won’t share the abhorrent graffiti that defaced this play area, but wanted to let concerned residents know that Hackney Council teams were out last night and again this morning to remove it. Everyone should feel safe to play in Hackney.”

Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Councillor Susan Fajana-Thomas, added:

“Hackney Council strongly condemns the hateful graffiti that appeared in a local play area this week. This behaviour is completely unacceptable and has no place in our borough.”

“We are committed to ensuring that everyone in Hackney feels safe in our public spaces, especially places designed for children and families. We’re working closely with partners, including the police, to investigate and take further action if needed.”

Police Urge Public to Help Catch Vandals

Anyone with dashcam footage, CCTV, or eyewitness accounts related to the incident is urged to come forward. Hate crimes or vandalism can be reported by calling 101 or via the Hackney Council website at hackney.gov.uk/crime-and-safety.
