Over 100 Arrested After London Protest Erupts in Violence
More than 100 people were hauled in by police during today’s chaotic protest in central London. By 9pm, arrests covered a range of offences, including breach of the peace, violent disorder, assaults on officers, possession of offensive weapons, Class A drugs, and drunk and disorderly behaviour.
Major Police Operation in the Capital
Thousands descended on the capital on Saturday, June 13, sparking a massive police response. Ahead of the rally, officers slapped down strict conditions to keep the crowds under control and prevent trouble.
Scotland Yard also enforced a section 60 stop-and-search, targeting individuals believed to be carrying weapons.
Police Praise Compliant Protesters But Condemn Violence
Commander Bas Javid acknowledged that many attendees followed the rules and cooperated with officers throughout the day. But he slammed those who chose a violent path.
“Thousands have travelled to London despite being asked not to and some of those have been intent on causing harm,” Javid said.
“There have been pockets of violence directed towards our officers. This is completely unacceptable and I condemn those involved.”
Warning: Protest Must End By 5pm
Police gave a final warning that the protest must wrap up by 5pm. After that, any stragglers faced a crackdown involving dispersal tactics and arrests.
“From 5pm any protest must end. Those linked to these events may see us use a range of tactics to disperse those that remain which may include arrests,” Commander Javid said.
“We will not tolerate the violence previously exhibited by some protestors. My message to those who remain in central London is go home.”
With tensions high and law enforcement on high alert, the message is clear: London’s streets are no place for troublemakers tonight.
