Chelmsford Cracks Down on Violence with High-Tech Patrols
Chelmsford’s Community Policing Team teamed up with the Operational Support Group (OSG) for a major night of action in the city centre last Saturday. The event also marked the launch of upgraded CCTV and street lighting to boost public safety.
New OpenGate Tech Targets Knife Crime
Over 20 officers hit the streets, deploying Essex Police’s cutting-edge OpenGate weapons detection system for the first time in the city as part of Operation Grip, a crackdown on violent crime hotspots.
Essex was the first force nationally to use the mobile, discreet OpenGate device instead of bulky knife arches. Three units are now active across Essex.
Better Lighting and CCTV After Women Speak Out
Following research by the University of Essex, which pinpointed spots where women and girls felt unsafe, Home Office funding was secured to upgrade lighting and CCTV near Chelmsford train station, Duke Street, and the High Street/Springfield Road junction.
These improvements come as part of the Women’s Safety Charter, launched in November by Chelmsford City Council and the Business Improvement District (BID). City centre venues have signed up to become safe spaces for women and girls.
Police and Partners Pledge Ongoing Protection
Detective Chief Inspector Neal Miller, Serious Violence Unit, said:
“This initiative highlights the excellent work we’re doing with partners to support the Women’s Safety Charter and reduce serious violence through Operation Grip patrols.”
“Extra CCTV and lighting reassure the public and show we’re listening to their safety concerns.”
“We will maintain high-visibility patrols countywide to prevent crime, using OpenGate technology to detect and stop knife crime.”
Chief Inspector Paul Ballard, Chelmsford and Maldon District Commander, added:
“Chelmsford is already a safe place for a night out. Improving lighting and CCTV benefits everyone.”
“Women and girls told us where they feel vulnerable. We’ve acted on their concerns because their safety is a top priority.”
“Our officers patrol the night-time economy year-round, working closely with venue staff and CCTV teams. Troublemakers will be dealt with swiftly, and help is always available.”
MP Vicky Ford joined officers on patrol to back the crackdown and safety upgrades, reinforcing the city’s commitment to safer nights out for all.
