Elderly Woman Rescued from Mud and Tides in Dramatic Kent Operation
A 74-year-old woman sparked a major rescue mission after becoming trapped in mud and cut off by the outgoing tide near Gillingham, Kent, on Friday evening. The multi-agency effort involved 20 coastguards, Kent Fire and Rescue’s specialist mud team, and a Coastguard rescue helicopter from Lydd.
Stranded 400 Feet Out to Sea
The woman was stuck thigh-deep in mud around 400 feet from shore, near the Strand Open-Air Leisure Pool. Her partner was on firmer ground but unable to reach her safely. The incident happened just after 8pm, prompting an urgent call to Kent coastguards, the fire service, ambulance, and police.
Helicopter Winch Rescue Saves the Day
Initial plans to deploy mud rescue technicians by helicopter were scrapped due to fading light and the woman’s remote location. Instead, the rescue helicopter dropped a winchman directly onto the scene. Using the helicopter’s winch, the team pulled the trapped woman free and airlifted her to safety.
She was flown to Riverside Country Park in Gillingham, where she was checked over by paramedics. Her husband then collected her on dry land shortly after 9pm.
Major Effort in Harrowing Rescue
- 20 coastguard rescue officers involved
- Kent Fire and Rescue mud team deployed
- Coastguard rescue helicopter from Lydd on scene
- Support from Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance paramedics
Officials confirmed the helicopter winch plan was key to a swift rescue. Without it, the operation could have dragged on well into the night using ropes and specialist access techniques.
A huge relief for all involved — and a cautionary tale about the dangers of Kent’s tidal mudflats.
