A man was shot dead just after 7pm on Thursday, June 19, in broad daylight outside a bustling Costco superstore on Imperial Way, near Purley Way retail area. Emergency services swarmed the scene following reports of gunfire in the large car park.
Witnesses Describe Horror as Shoppers Flee
Chaos erupted as shoppers scrambled for safety. A lorry driver, making a delivery nearby, told how he witnessed the brutal attack unfold just metres away.
“I was dropping my load at the rear of the store when I saw a man across the car park. Out of nowhere, another man opened fire – bang, bang. He shot him as he was trying to escape,” the driver said.
“People were screaming and diving for cover. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”
Victim Dies at Scene, Police Launch Murder Investigation
The victim, believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedics’ best efforts. His identity has not been released. The area remains cordoned off tonight, with a heavy police presence and forensic teams combing the scene.
Met Police confirmed a murder investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made so far.
A Metropolitan Police source said: “We were called at 19:03hrs on Thursday, 19 June to reports of a shooting. A crime scene is in place and enquiries are ongoing.”
