Police Blunder Lets Sutton Teen’s Killer Escape Abroad

The family of 17-year-old Ilyas Habibi, fatally stabbed last December outside Sutton train station, is devastated. The prime suspect fled the UK thanks to a shocking police error. Despite knowing the suspect’s identity two days before, authorities failed to stop him leaving via Gatwick" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Gatwick Airport just four days after the murder.

Tragic Attack on Promising Teen

Ilyas was attacked on December 5, 2023, on his way home from college. The teenager, who loved football and studied construction, suffered a fatal knife wound during an altercation outside Sutton station. He was found with severe injuries on Sutton High Street and died shortly after.

‘Computer Error’ Allowed Suspect to Slip Away

The Met Police admitted a “computer error” blocked urgent border alerts, letting the suspect slip past UK immigration undetected. The Habibi family was told police failed to inform border officials in time, allowing a clean getaway.

Killer Mocks Family with Taunts from Abroad

Adding insult to injury, Ilyas’ older brother has received chilling Snapchat messages from the alleged killer. The taunts callously mocked Ilyas’ death, detailing how he was “choking” on his blood — complete with laughing emojis. Despite the family passing these messages to police, they say they’ve had little feedback.

“I’m only trying to think about who killed my brother. The police don’t even get in contact, someone was murdered and they don’t care,” the brother told The Independent. He also criticised the lack of updates about a 19-year-old arrested last December for assisting the offender but later released on bail.

Met Police Vow to Continue Hunt

The Met confirmed the investigation is ongoing and that they are working with international partners to track the suspect, who fled on December 9. A spokesperson said, “Our thoughts remain with Ilyas’ family at what we know is an extremely difficult time. A dedicated family liaison officer is in regular contact to offer support and updates.”

Family Condemns Police Callousness

The Habibi family are still reeling from their loss and furious at the police’s handling of the case. Ilyas’ brother recalled the blunt way officers broke the news: “They asked if my parents were related to Ilyas and then just said, ‘Ilyas has been stabbed and he’s dead’. No filters, no sensitivity.”

As they battle grief and trauma, the family and community demand justice—and answers for how a prime murder suspect managed to escape the country and continue tormenting them from abroad.

Police are urging anyone with information to step forward to help bring Ilyas’ killer to justice.
