Huge Drugs Haul Seized at Birmingham Airport
Border Force has arrested nine people at Birmingham Airport in the past two weeks, all caught with huge stashes of drugs packed in their suitcases.
Massive 260kg of Drugs Worth £750,000 Confiscated
The suspects were carrying between 15 and 40 kilos each, adding up to around 260 kilos seized. The haul is estimated to be worth a staggering £750,000.
Five arrested passengers arrived from Thailand, while four flew in from the United States.
NCA Investigates Links Between Drug Smuggling Cases
All nine suspects have been arrested on suspicion of smuggling Class B drugs. They were questioned by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and have been bailed pending further inquiries.
The NCA is probing each seizure and trying to find any links between the cases.
“Following this unusual amount of seizures in such a short space of time, law enforcement will undoubtedly be paying more attention to passengers coming into Birmingham on certain routes and stepping up checks,” said NCA Branch Commander Mick Pope.
“We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of each case, but I want to make a direct appeal to anyone considering transporting drugs to the UK. Think very carefully about the consequences of getting caught.”
“In some of these cases, journeys started from places where cannabis may be legal, but that makes no difference once you set foot in the UK.”
“Organised crime gangs depend on couriers to bring illegal substances into the country. Those caught face stiff jail sentences. It simply isn’t worth the risk.”
